On Monday 27th April London based indie-rock band MOSAICS held a launch party at The Lower Third in Soho to celebrate the release of their debut EP A Guiding Lie which was released 3 days prior to the event on 24th April. They were supported on the night by London band Scale and Bristol-based band Nothing Rhymes With Orange. Both were brilliant young indie bands and were incredibly talented.
MOSAICS came on around 9.15pm and performed the EP along with some of their other singles such as ‘Shock Horror’. The 5 track EP includes other notable tracks such as ‘Heaven Knows’ and ‘Sing Me To Sleep’ which I particularly enjoyed for their authentic lyrics and definitive indie sound. The band consists of four members: lead vocalist Owen Castillo, guitarist and co-writer Stu Smith, bassist El Modena and drummer Josh Seetanah. The band had great onstage chemistry and engaged well with the crowd.
I thought that Owen had a great stage presence and was very humorous throughout, joking that his ‘declines in mental health’ gave the inspiration for their songs. Drummer Josh cheered at this and Owen jokingly advertised to the audience that they were looking for a new drummer. Aside from the comical stage presence, I really enjoyed their music as it felt very real, a core ingredient to all indie music. I thought lyrically their music was very poetic and there was some really raw emotion and energy coming from their performance. It was evident that these songs meant a lot to the band, I think this was felt throughout the room.
The band shared onstage anecdotes around the enjoyment of creating the EP which was recorded at Giant Wafer Studios in Wales and was later published by Xaccuti Productions. The EP is a great accomplishment for the band and the launch party was a perfect celebration of this. Later in the evening the band were joined onstage by James McCartney and saxophonist Jamie Allen. McCartney features on the MOSAICS song ‘Different People’ which was also performed on the night. He also treated the audience to a solo performance of his solo track ‘Angel’.
Ultimately the evening was thoroughly enjoyable and it’s clear to see the band have built a strong foundation in the creation of A Guiding Lie. I’m excited to see where the band go from here and what lies ahead for them following this excellent release.
Listen to A Guiding Lie.
