In advance of Johnny Marr’s fifth studio album, ‘The Age of Everything’, releasing on the 2nd October 2026, the second single from the record has dropped. ‘Ophelia’ was released on Friday 24th July following the success of the album’s debut single ‘Spin’, and Johnny Marr’s sold out gigs in both Dublin’s Iveagh Gardens and his homecoming at Manchester’s Castlefield Bowl. ‘Ophelia’ has previously been played live in an array of European and American dates on Marr’s 2025 tour but was absent from the recent shows in the UK, as anticipation built around the release of the single.

‘Ophelia’ starts in classic Marr style, with an iconic sounding riff, reminiscent of his Modest Mouse era mixed with a sound not too dissimilar to his debut solo record, The Messenger. The guitar line somehow sounds new, fresh and original simultaneously. The instrumentation that carries through the song is instant Marr, giving the song an immediate familiar quality and fans a build-up of excitement for the new record. The lyrics were inspired by Shakespeare’s notable character and the strength around her. Johnny Marr said:

“The character of Ophelia is confounding but there's a real nobility and strength which reminds me of someone in my life. So the name just stuck and sounded like a song. I thought about the character and I saw quite a few similarities with the Ophelia. As a songwriter, sometimes these things happen where it just sings really well over the track and you go with it. It turned out right.”

With the release of ‘Spin’ and ‘Ophelia’, Marr’s fifth album is shaping up to be a riff-filled frenzy, full of well planned lyrics mixed with the classic sounding ‘jangle’ of his signature guitar style. There is a mix of both familiarity and uniqueness, confirming Marr’s strengths as a solo artist both musically and lyrically.

‘The Age of Everything’ will bring 10 new Johnny Marr tracks to the world on the 2nd October. It is available for pre-order now.
