Forget 'Sweet Caroline'. Bin off the brass band. There’s a new soundtrack echoing around the stadiums at the 2026 World Cup, and it comes straight out of Manchester, circa 1995.
Following England's blistering 4-2 opening victory against Croatia over in Dallas Wednesday (17th June), something genuinely electric happened. Instead of the usual terrace chants, an estimated 20,000 travelling Three Lions fans stayed behind in the stands of the AT&T Stadium to belt out the undisputed Britpop colossus: Oasis’ "Wonderwall".
The footage, shared by ITV Football on X (formerly Twitter), went viral instantly. The clip showed a visibly awestruck England squad—including Jude Bellingham and captain Harry Kane—mouthing the words and serenading the crowd right back. It wasn't just a post-match celebration; it was a bona fide cultural moment.
The Gallaghers Speak
Naturally, the Gallagher brothers have caught wind of the footage, and for once, they seem to be in total agreement.
Reacting to the sheer volume of "Wonderwall" streams surging across the globe, Liam Gallagher took to X with his trademark swagger after fan account Oasis Planet shared the stats. Liam’s verdict?
"And rightly so it’s a f***ing classic and I sound BIBLICAL on it."
He's not wrong. But perhaps more surprisingly, Noel Gallagher—a die-hard Manchester City fan who famously claimed he wasn't an England supporter—has also given his blessing to the track becoming the national squad's unofficial 2026 anthem.
Speaking to The Sun, the Chief said:
“Wonderwall belongs to the people, and it was a magical moment between the people and the players. Best of luck to everyone who’s made the trip out there.”
The Squad Reacts
It wasn’t just the fans who felt the goosebumps. The players out on the pitch were equally moved by the colossal singalong. Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice summed up the atmosphere beautifully:
Declan Rice: “On the pitch after the game and we were just connecting with the fans and they were singing. That was special. I think it’s one of them moments — just a memory now — it’s gone. You never get that moment back. Being in Dallas, singing Wonderwall. There’s nothing like that first time.”
Dan Burn: The Newcastle united defender echoed the sentiment, calling the impromptu chorus
"an amazing moment for me.”
A Supersonic Surge in Streams
The magic of Dallas isn't just living in the memories of the fans who made the trip; it's blowing up the algorithms.
Ahead of England's second Group L clash against Ghana at the Gillette Stadium in Boston on Tuesday, Spotify confirmed an absolute massive spike in the track's popularity. Streams of "Wonderwall" shot up by 50%, with reports indicating the remastered version is currently pulling in over 1.7 million daily plays on the platform.
Whether or not the Three Lions go all the way and bring it home this tournament remains to be seen. But one thing is for certain: Thomas Tuchel's squad has finally found a soundtrack with a bit of proper grit, swagger, and rock 'n' roll soul.
